Along the Beach Road

Wandering through Southport and over the bridge to Oak Island and Caswell Beach, I noticed a few signs of the season change.

There are flowers along the road, leaves on the trees and the temperature was still summer like, however, the summer visitors have returned to their homes and the traffic is light even at midday. I knew we had arrived at another calendar page when I went over the bridge without any traffic in sight.

There were still some boats tied to their moorings but I passed several trucks pulling boats toward winter storage.

The days are warm enough for swimming and spending time with your favorite book in a beach chair. The fishing is lively due to several storms in the Atlantic and there's a tournament coming up this weekend to entice visitors to Southport.

Weekends still bring in the visitors, to browse and sightsee, to shop and relax in the area restaurants. Yacht Basin Eatery was doing a brisk business with the warm sunshine after several days of overcast skies.

The Yacht Basin Provision Co. and Fishy Fishy were also busy with local business as well as a few folks out for the day.

Traveling into Caswell Beach toward the lighthouse, I passed local workmen on their way to fall projects. The lighthouse was open and available for the few visitors out for an afternoon at the beach.

Along Ocean Dr. the traffic was light and the beach parking available at every entry point. Down at the Intracoastal Waterway, the water was so still it mirrored the sky.

Oak Island parks were quiet until after school when the local residents came out to fish from the pier.

Flowers are still blooming, the weather is fine and the beaches are empty. What a fine time for a trip to Southport, Oak Island beaches to enjoy the many autumn activities.
