Along the Marina

Southport is an old port city, supposedly used by pirates because of ease of escape behind islands, into estuaries.  Today the commercial port in Wilmington handles the large barges and Southport concentrates on pleasure craft. Large and small, the boats are busy throughout the autumn days.

Marinas dot the coast, Southport, St. James and along the inland waterway. Protected coves and the waterway were useful during the recent Hurricane Irene, giving the increased water a place to flow rather than over the streets and lawns of the town.

Southport has two ferry systems, the Ft. Fisher-Southport ferry and the Bald Head Island-Southport ferry. Smaller craft can be found at the Southport Marina.

Whether large or small, private or commercial, the boats of Southport and surrounding areas are a pleasure to watch as they pass by on their way out to sea.
