Signs of the Times

Irene is long gone with her wind and rain, sparing us the flooding found in the Northeast. The damage was minimal in comparison yet clean up began as soon as the radar showed the storm moving away. The piles of pine cones, leaf debris and tree branches were set in front of each house and Southport returned to its sunny disposition. The flags were flying, the marina was calm with boats at their docks.

Deciding to walk through the water's edge, I discovered all sorts of signs. Signs to welcome newcomers, shoppers, visitors, boating enthusiasts and history buffs.  Some of the signs are weathered and worn with age, others are brightly colored, attracting attention. All are colorful and provide an in depth look into southport's history as well as the current trends.

Ice cream and candy. What more could anybody ask for?

Down by the water, lots of silly sayings are posted. Perhaps this was the precursor to Facebook.

For those who love the beach and want to enjoy the rays of the sun, This Way to the Beach.

A good way to see the natural side of the marina and the waterfront, using the boardwalk out to the gazebo in the marsh.

Another sign that there are always things to do, share and scare your socks off.

And the historian within you will find beautiful weathered carved plaques out by the waterfront. Reminders of Southport's glowing history dating back to the Revolution.

Southport has a rich Naval history and whether right or wrong, the citizens risked lives to rescue all who find themselves near the harbor.

Finally, a sign that says, You are safe here. Welcome.
