Out and About

The spinning calendar of the end of year events is increasing its speed. Here we are well into December and the shopping countdown is in full swing, the trees are up and lit and the schedule of events is full of holiday magic waiting for you.

Every opportunity for your holiday pleasure is offered throughout the area and in neighboring counties. Consider the many wonderful non profit agencies needing your support along with the less fortunate residents in and around your community.

Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center provides hospice services to Brunswick County residents as well as New Hanover, Pender, Bladen and Columbus counties. Your continued support helps thousands of patients and their families dealing with life limiting illness, supportive services and community education.  Although supported by hundreds of volunteers throughout the five counties, LCFH welcomes your tax deductible donation to continue the good work begun in 1980 and the new care center in Brunswick county.

The local food banks, Goodwill Industries and the Salvation Army collect and distribute food and clothing for needy families, provide a location for your gently used household items and clothing and provide shelter for many during storms and bad weather. Consider any one of these organizations when you are clearing closets, grocery shopping or passing by the red kettle outside local stores. Your contribution can make a difference.

As always, the Marines are collecting Toys for Tots, their annual gift giving program for the under privileged children. Although a national program, your toy donation can be received locally when you donate an unused, unwrapped toy in any number of boxes in our local shops. Remember the excitement you felt when hearing your name called out for a gift. Surprise and gratitude. Let's hope we can keep that feeling alive.

Finally, let us remember to shop locally during this busy season. There are just 19 shopping days left for you to find that perfect gift for everybody on your list. Every effort you make to support your local merchants returns to you in benefits throughout your community. Shopping locally will enhance your gift giving reputation as you will find uniquely special gifts for each person on your list. Remember, there are also pets out there ready for a holiday treat. Stop in and find the perfect gift for each one on your list, you'll be glad you did.
